Coffee is undoubtedly one of the most popular beverages in the world and there are various ways to enjoy it. Two popular ways to enjoy coffee are the americano and the long black. While both of these coffees are made with espresso, there are some differences that set them apart. In this article “Americano vs Long Balck”, you’ll find similarities and differences between americano and long black.
What is Americano?
An Americano is a coffee drink that is made by adding hot water to espresso. This creates a coffee that is similar to what you would find in a filter coffee. The name, Americano is thought to be a reference to the American soldiers who were stationed in Italy during World War II. Americanos can be enjoyed with milk and sugar, but are usually served black.
To be honest, I once thought Americano was simply a filtered coffee that we would see at diners in Hollywood films! How wrong I was 🙁 At least, I’ve learnt something new.
What is Long Black?
A long black is a coffee typically made with a double espresso and hot water. The drink originates from Australia and is sometimes confused with an Americano. A long black has a stronger flavour than a regular black coffee and is often preferred by coffee drinkers who want a more intense caffeine kick. It’s also perfect if you don’t feel like short black (espresso), but need something strong.
I always drink espresso at home but I usually order long black at cafes when I catch up with my friends. Why? Well, it will last longer while having chats, not like a couple of sips 🙂 And of course, I can enjoy the flavour longer as well.
Americano vs Long Black – Similarities
The Americano and Long Black coffees are two very popular drinks that have mainly four similarities:
- Both coffees are made with espresso and hot water.
- They are served in similar size cups.
- They both have a strong coffee flavour.
- They are usually served without milk and sugar.
You might be thinking that these two could be the same. Next, let’s look at the differences.
Americano vs Long Black – Differences
Both Americano and Long Black have their own unique flavours that set them apart from each other. Here’s a breakdown of the differences between them:
- The Americano is made by adding hot water to espresso, while the long black is made by adding espresso to hot water.
- The Americano is usually lighter in colour, while the long black is usually darker in colour.
- The Americano has a more watered-down taste, while the long black has a more intense flavour with more visible crema.
Which is Better, Americano or Long Black?
So, which is the winner, Americano vs Long Black? Well, there’s no definitive answer to this question as it largely depends on personal preference. An Americano is made by adding hot water to espresso, resulting in a less intense, more diluted drink. A long black, on the other hand, is made by pouring espresso over hot water, resulting in a more intense flavour. Some people prefer the weaker flavour of the Americano while others prefer the stronger flavour of the long black. Ultimately, it’s up to the individual to decide which drink they prefer. For me, it’s definitely the long black!
Final Thoughts
If you’re a coffee lover, you’ve probably had both an Americano and a Long Black. While they may look similar, they actually have quite different tastes. An Americano is made with espresso and hot water, while a Long Black is made with hot water and then espresso is added. This gives the Long Black a stronger coffee flavour. So, if you’re looking for a stronger coffee drink, go for a Long Black. If you want something with a more mellow flavour, then go for an Americano.
